The 16-digit virtual ID will serve as a security layer in the base database and will cater to the privacy concerns of the people. People can use this base service as replacement of biometric ID in new SIM purchase, SIM replacement, banking facilities, passport etc.
What is the virtual id?
Virtual ID is an option of the base number. This temporary code contains 16 digits which are generated against a base number. However, virtual ID can not be used in any case to recover the original base card. At one time, only one virtual ID is generated against the base number. It can be generated as often as the user wants.
How to Generate Virtual ID Number Step by Step Process
However, to let you know that you have to have a registered mobile number with UIDAI to avail this service because the virtual ID will be sent to your mobile number. If you have not registered your mobile number with UIDAI, then you have to first link with your mobile number base. To create a base virtual ID, you can follow the steps given below:
Step 1: Go to UIDAI’s VID Generation page https://resident.uidai.gov.in/vidgeneration
Step 2: Now enter your 12-digit aadhar number and security code
Step 3: Now click on the “Send OTP” button
Step 4: An OTP will be sent to your mobile number registered with UIDAI
Step 5: Enter the OTP and select the “Generate VID” or “Recover VID” option
Step 6: Now click the submit button
Step 7: You will get a message like “Congratulations!” Your VIN number was successfully generated and sent to your registered mobile. “
Step 8: You will get a message mentioning the 16 digit virtual ID for the Aadhaar number and the last 4 digits of the base on your registered mobile number,
Features of the virtual id
All residents are allowed to generate any number of virtual IDs. The previous VID will be automatically canceled on the new VID generation. This is an alternative option for authentication and KYC services that remains valid for a specific amount or until a user changes it.
This virtual ID is similar to the use of Aadhaar numbers and agencies can not use VID for duplicates. This new VID number will ensure the security and confidentiality of the system base card holders. So far, UIDAI has issued 119 million Aadhaar cards across the country, which need to be protected and maintained.
